Buckingham Palace is showing off New Zealand’s gifts to the Queen over the last 50-odd years this month, alongside gifts from other Commonwealth countries.
Good grief. Elizabeth knows there is a recession on – the poor thing has lost $200 million according to Forbes magazine – leaving her ranked just 13th in the world’s richest royals, with just on $450 million left. That doesn’t include Buckingham Palace, the Crown Jewels and the royal art collection by the way, apparently they belong to the state.
But despite this, showing off priceless presents from colonial property still seems appropriate in Buckingham Palace. Which, since I hold residency in the UK, I guess will be available for me to doss down in next time I cycle through London.
Times are indeed tough all over.
