Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, it’s Rape Awareness Week – this year the message is rape is preventable. Research shows 1 in every 5 or 6 girls, and 1 in every 6 to 10 boys will be sexually abused before they are 16 here.
Last year, Rape Awareness Week was launched in Parliament by Steve Chadwick. This year, organisations around the country working with survivors of sexual violence are asking for donations.
If you’re in Auckland, you can donate to Rape Prevention Education (formerly Auckland Rape Crisis) and support the prevention programmes they deliver in Auckland schools.
If you’re somewhere else in the country, you can find your local services here. Any donation is welcome – these services struggle to meet the needs of all those who have been raped or sexually abused – so if you’ve got some spare dosh, give them a ring.
